What Is Irlen® Syndrome?

Irlen® Syndrome (Scotopic Sensitivity) (SSS) is a perceptual problem that prevents an estimated 12–15% of the population from being able to learn, read, or study efficiently. Many of the perceptual problems have baffled educators and the scientific community because they remain undetected by the standard educational, visual and medical tests.

What We Do:

At South County Irlen Screeners, we will determine if you have Irlen Syndrome through a series of perceptual tasks administered by a certified Irlen Screener. The testing may bring awareness of the various distortions you may experience while reading, as well as determining the degree of Irlen symptoms. We will use a variety of colored overlays to find the right combination of colors to ease Irlen symptoms and rid you of the distortions. You will leave your screening process with your own personalized set of colored overlays. Most clients see immediate improvement in one or more of the following areas: reading rate, comfort while reading, fluency, error rate, sight vocabulary, comprehension, and sustained attention. For people who test at a moderate to severe level of Irlen, or who get significant improvement from the colored overlays, we will refer you to the Irlen Institute for a diagnostic session for your own personal spectral filters. These can be worn as glasses or contact lenses all the time, rather than using the overlays. An initial screening appointment takes around two hours.
